Clue 7: Deciding The Best Visual Medium To Use

A lot goes into video production, and producing the most engaging and creative video also relies heavily on the visual medium your video will use. The three most popular mediums used in videos are 2D, 3D animation and live action, as well as the option of using a combination of all three.
We’ll be explaining a little bit about each medium to help you decide on your perfect match.

2D Animation
Firstly, 2D animation is a practice that has been around since the 1900s; it is the technique of taking two dimensional static objects and bringing them to ‘life’ with movement and audio. 2D animation differs from other types of animation, in that it deals with objects in a 2D plane. There are various types of 2D animation including; traditional pencil drawn illustrations, cut-out animation, digital animation. These could need an animator to make up to 25 images for every second of animation.

3D Animation
3D animation is a much younger practice than 2D animation, which still uses most of the same principles. The major difference separating the two types, is that 3D animation software allows you to virtually create 3D objects in a virtual space.

Here is an awesome example using the ‘Playstation Plus’ advert Aniboxx created for Sony.

Live Action
“Live action” or “film” is much different from animation; it is when you record real actors or props instead of creating them. In terms of telling a story this is the quickest form of doing so, but you are limited to what you can create using real people. However all these mediums can be used together to produce really exciting and engaging results.

Here is a great example from the ‘Democr.io’ viral video produced by Aniboxx
